DESCRIPTION
This sculpture of a bronze warrior figure of West African heritage was crafted during the early 1900s. These figures were originally commemorative of specific kings and specially forged for placement within royal palaces, used for processional or funerary ceremonies and placed on sacred altars. Designed to pay homage these figures served as both guardians and reminders to the community of the very attributes and essence of kingship. The ceremonial calabash and drinking cup held in the hands of the figure are symbols of leadership. Note the prestige cap on the head of the sculpture!
