DESCRIPTION

The Gara embroidery is uniquely linked to the Parsis, a community which had migrated in medieval times from Persia. Primarily worn on saris by their women folk during weddings and other celebrations, this type of photorealistic embroidery of flora and fauna is said to have been introduced into their community due to the extensive trade links which they had with China. Both Persian and Chinese influences can be seen in the array of motifs, including leaves, foliage, roses, chrysanthemums, and the mythical Simurgh (phoenix-like creature).
