DESCRIPTION

These red and black Burmese lacquer Betel Boxes are from the late 1800s. Known as "kun it" in Burmese, these are quite large cylindrical boxes made from woven and turned bamboo. Decorated by a incised lacquer technique called yun you can see the intricate red filigree swirl gracefully against a deep black lacquer backdrop. The illustrations depicting folk art characters, priests and priestesses seated in a temple, providing a glimpse into the cultural and religious aspects of Burmese life at the time.
